Judy Freed
Playwright/Author
Reading
Judy's plays Flowers in January, Free as a Fish and The Pied Piper of Hamelin
appear in Pearson Scott Foresman's Reading Street Readers' Theater
Anthologies (grades 1-3). Her short story "Demeter's Daughter" was published in
Pearson Scott Foresman's Great Expectations reading textbook (grade 6).
Favorite assignment: writing a readers' theater script for first graders. What could
be more fun than getting new readers excited about words?
Social Studies
Judy was a contributing writer to National Geographic's Reading Expeditions
World History Series (grades 6-8). She researched and wrote articles for Early
Humans, The First Civilizations, Greek Civilization, Ancient Rome and The
Islamic World. Favorite research finding: Did you know that Neanderthals played
musical instruments? Archaeologists have discovered animal-bone flutes made
by Neanderthals as much as 53,000 years ago.
Health
Judy created the script and story for the award-winning musical Tickle Cakes, a
drug prevention musical for grades K-4. Recognized by the American Alliance for
Theatre & Education, Tickle Cakes has toured both rural and urban schools and
theaters in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Favorite song in the show: "Welcome to the
Club," a delightfully complex and rhythmic anthem for Tickle Monsters by
composer/lyricist Leo Schwartz.
School Readiness
Judy wrote the script and story for Tantrum on the Tracks, an interactive musical
that teaches school readiness and socialization skills to preschoolers. Created
in partnership with early childhood education experts, the Duncan YMCA and
Theatre Building Chicago, Tantrum on the Tracks features music and lyrics by
Marianne Kallen. Favorite memory: hearing kids in the audience imitate the train
sounds of their favorite characters after the show.
